Australian National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey
The 2007 Australian National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey results were released on the 3rd October 2008
The survey of 4400 children (aged two to 16) and their parents showed a substantial decline in intake of milk products and dishes as children age, particularly for adolescent girls.
A particularly worrying result was that 82-89% of Australian girls 12-16 did are not getting enough calcium. Adequate calcium intake during childhood and adolescence, when most bone building occurs, is vital for the development of strong bones. Inadequate intake of calcium rich foods, such as dairy, puts them at risk of developing weak bones as they grow.
